Big Ideas Night: Living with Loss
Monday 1 September
Steve Askin was a helicopter pilot, soldier and family man. Steve was a former member of the New Zealand Special Air Service and in 2014 had been awarded the Gallantry Star, New Zealand's second highest military decoration, for exceptional bravery during service in the war in Afghanistan, and during the 2011 Intercontinental Hotel siege in Kabul where he was instrumental in the rescue of 70 people in that operation.
Sadly, there was a day that Steve didn’t come home from work. During the 2017 Port Hills fires, Steve fought the fires from the air. Piloting a helicopter that crashed, he lost his life in the service of others.
His parents, Paul and Lesley are joining us to talk about that day and dealing with loss.
