Serving in the sweet spot
"Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms."
— 1 Peter 4:10
God has given each of us gifts for loving and serving one another, and we love to see every part of the body using theirs. We organise our serving around teams, who take ownership of various church outcomes. Our teams are also places of discipleship, where we grow in faith as we serve alongside one another.
The sweet spot
When considering ways to serve at church, consider three things: your gifts and abilities, your passions and desires, and the needs at church. Where all three overlap is the sweet spot, where serving is joyful, effective and sustainable over the long term.
We won’t always land there straight away. Sometimes we serve for a season where only two circles meet, perhaps meeting a need with our gifts even if it isn’t our passion, or growing in skills for an area we care about. These seasons can be fruitful, but over time we want to help you find your place in the centre. And underneath it all, love for God and one another is what motivates our serving.
Two pathways into serving
There are two ways to get involved in serving at Cornerstone.
Pathway 1: Through becoming a member
When you become a member at Cornerstone, you’ll have the opportunity to join our Welcoming, Hospitality or Production teams. These teams serve the congregation you already attend, so you’ll get to know the people you gather with each week, and we love seeing real relationships grow within each team. They’re also an easy place to start, with roles you can step into without lots of prior training or experience, and a great way to help make church feel like home.
Pathway 2: Through a conversation
To join another team or change teams, start with a conversation. Whether you're new to serving or have been serving for years, we'd love for you to talk with a team leader or ministry leader about where you'd like to serve and why.
Our serving form helps move that conversation forward. It lets us know where you're at, connects you with the right person and makes sure nothing gets missed. You can use it to:
Start serving on a new team
Change to a different team or role
Step off a team, for a season or longer
Talk with someone about your next steps
If you're already serving and thinking about a change, please chat with your current team leader too. If that feels difficult, the form gives you the option for us to let them know, and we'll follow up with you.
For leaders
Team and ministry leaders can use the same form to share team changes, volunteer needs, invitations and team health updates.
